The skin we live in. Part 1

The skin we live in. Part 1

C osmetology is a serious science. It’s a far cry from the days when a small, poorly illuminated room could be referred to as the “cosmetology center”. Now most medical centers and beauty salons use the whole range of new dermatological products. In modern cosmetology there is a huge variety of techniques for body and facial rejuvenation.

In the search for new treatments and innovative miracle “nano-technology” creams and lotions, many of us are ready to move mountains, but, oddly enough, in modern aesthetic medicine the word "innovation" is often fraught with the greatest danger. In commercials we are told about stem cells and PRP-therapy, but what do we actually know about it? And all too often, some cosmetologists sing the praises upon one methodology, and others immediately conduct research questioning the adequacy of this certain technique.

Scientists have proved that the condition and appearance of the skin has a direct impact on the psycho-emotional state, and, as a result, it determines the measure of success and self-esteem in the social sphere and in communication with other people.
Proper care and protection of the body without outside interference is possible only if one possesses the necessary knowledge and full and competent view on the structure of the human body. Improper beauty treatments can disrupt the delicate balance in the entire organism and cause not only skin problems, but also severe internal diseases. We invite you on an exciting journey through the "inner space" of the human body. Let it tell you that beautiful skin is the result of internal and external balancing of the entire system.

Every day we prove by our own experience that the resources of the human body, inherent in its' very nature, with properly integrated care eliminates the need for injections and scalpels. The human body is smarter than we are. It knows exactly its own capability; and our main task is to not interfere. Any surgical intervention should be dictated by an urgent need; namely, the immediate risk to human life or health. In all other cases, only one small, but conscious intention is able to activate in the body a truly amazing process of rejuvenation and regeneration.

However, for the wellbeing of the all inner parts of a human body, it is necessary to understand, at least in general terms, how the whole system works and what it consists of. It is not our task to teach our readers a short medical course on specialty "dermatology". The scope of knowledge required in this area is immeasurable: including physiology, cytology, histology, and molecular biology. We want to talk in a simple way about the structure, elements and functions of the organism in terms of aesthetics. We believe in the possibility to affect the skin using easily accessible therapeutic agents.

Therefore, self-care should not be a waste of time, money and health. So what is the skin? Let’s take a closer look:

  • The skin is a unique organ of the human body: this is the barrier that deals with the potentially harsh outside conditions, and the membrane, which is connecting our body with the environment. The skin has many functions: absorbent, thermostatic, receptor, barrier, respiratory, toxins release, plus many more.
  • The skin is made up of three different layers, which are radically different from each other in structure and in their functional load. It’s important to understand upon which layer, or layers, cosmetic effects are directed.
  • Mother Nature provided our skin with the magical property of self-renewal and regeneration, enabling it to improve its' condition and appearance. Everyone has to understand the mechanism of these effects and to learn how it works.
  • Not a single cell of our body exists by itself, in isolation from the other organs and systems. Everything in the human body is interconnected. If our skin has any problems, they can affect the entire body. If something is wrong, for example, in the digestive system, is very likely it would also affect the skin condition. Therefore, it is impossible to solve one problem without solving the others.
  • Skin is not only the main attire of the body; it’s also a multifunctional organ responsible for communication with the environment, protection against external impacts and much, much more. Therefore, rush toward aesthetic perfection should follow the main principle - "First, do no harm!"

Yes, normally human beings are so accustomed to their "body suits", which are given to us even before the birth and accompanies us throughout life. It might be a bit weird to perceive our skin as something separate. Nevertheless, this is true. The human skin is a complex and multifunctional membrane that separates our fragile "inner space" of hardships and dangers of the changeable outside world.

The skin area of an adult human is around 1.5 - 2 m2, and its weight may be about 15% of the entire body weight.

Here is a list of the functions, which the skin carries out for our body.

  • Barrier. The skin protects the body from the outside penetration of various dangerous microorganisms, harmful substances and excessive ultraviolet radiation; it prevents the evaporation of moisture, and guards internal organs from injuries and contusions.
What protects the skin from mechanical injuries? Collagen and elastic fibers! The former is stretched along the axis of tension, and the elastic fibers return the skin to its common state. Excess skin extensibility is caused by the disruption of the structure of collagen fibers.
  • Thermostatic function. The skin is a kind of natural "air conditioning" for the human body: fat layer reduces heat loss, and vascular system and sweat glands regulate heat elimination.
  • Breathing function. The skin is able to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide directly, without the participation of the whole respiratory system..
  • Endocrine function. The skin synthesizes all necessary hormones for the successful operation of its internal needs.
  • Excretion function. Salts, fat-like substances, and products of cellular metabolism are derived out of the body with sweat, sebum and dead horny scales.
  • Receptor function. The nature has provided the skin with unique sensors, which are capable to recognize temperature and pressure, to assess the severity of external actions and to interpret them as pleasant or painful. .
  • Social function. The color and texture of the skin, features of how the subcutaneous mimic muscles work give the uniqueness to your appearance, and let every human being visually distinguish one person from another and transmit emotions. Healthy and beautiful skin plays an important role in shaping the social status of the individual.
The skin is the only organ that can renew itself in a very short period of time. The composition of the human skin changes completely for 28-30 days. For infants, this process runs even more quickly, in 72 hours.

The human skin is the outpost, fortification and warning system of the human body. It grins and bears all the blows of the environment and responds to possible dangers. It is the entire functional system involved in metabolic processes, maintaining the balance in the body and allowing the internal organs to remain alone. Such complex functionality determined the evolutionary development of the skin as a structure that combines a set of living cells, intercellular substance and dead cells. Therein lies the secret of it’s endurance.

Human skin consists of three layers: the epidermis, derma and subcutaneous adipose tissue. In cosmetology there’s an opportunity to have an impact on a particular layer of the skin, achieving a certain effect in the aesthetic procedures. Cosmetologist, on the basis of knowledge about the structure of the skin, should clearly understand what kind of structure is a target for cosmetics. With an eye to understand how to activate and support the skin cells, and where to find the recipe of the "eternal youth", in the next article we will talk about the structure of the skin in further detail.
